I'm excited about the upcoming show on NBC called Kings. Ian McShane is an amazing actor and I think a series can be successful with him involved as a main character. A few months ago I joined the Facebook Page as a fan for Kings thinking that this might be the official online community for the project. This page was developed in August of 2008.
This week I've seen a few commercials for the upcoming series and thought I would check in on the Facebook Page to see if there was any new discussions around the show. I discovered from reading the discussion board that there was a Kings Fan Group from a post by Patricia Gold on February 8th, 2009. When I followed this link I stumbled upon what I believe to be the official community for Kings but it was developed weeks before the premiere instead of months like the other group.
So what happened? The brand stewards of NBC Kings have failed at Propagation Planning. They should hire the crew members to do their online marketing because their efforts gathered together more advocates. In an era where shows are more likely to fail than succeed you would think the producers would try to build tribes around their Television Brands early and EARN MEDIA through word of mouth before they have to PAY FOR MEDIA.
The back-story is ripe for sparking Prosumers to contribute to the story of the Kingdom well before the first show is broadcast. Here are some free ideas for the producers to get people to participate with your brand before the premiere:
1. Get real soldiers to Vlog about life in the fictional Gilboa Armed Forces
2. Fake tabloid articles of the Royal Family seeding on television gossip websites
3. Send out Orange Butterfly Flags to fans so they can post photos with the flag on Flickr
Anyway if you are a fan of the show you can download the script to the pilot here and come up with your own ideas to participate with the story: Download Pilot Script
